What happens to a SOL swap if the receiving chain requires a memo

The swap fails, or the exchanger holds your funds until you provide the missing memo. In either case, the receiving chain will not credit the transaction to your account without that memo, because the memo is what tells the receiving chain which user the funds belong to.

You send from your own wallet straight to the exchanger — nothing to connect, no account, and you stay on this page throughout. Rates are indicative until a swap is opened.

The swap is carried out by an independent exchanger and the deposit address above is theirs. munchcoin.xyz never holds, receives or controls your funds, has no key to that address, and earns a referral commission. Opening a swap sends your receiving address, IP, browser and timezone to the exchanger for their compliance checks; we store none of it. Check their terms, fees and country restrictions before sending anything.

Here is the mechanism. When you swap SOL for an asset on a chain that requires a memo - common examples include many exchanges and some wallets on chains like XRP Ledger, Stellar, or certain BSC-based services - the exchanger sends the funds to a single shared deposit address. That address is used by every customer simultaneously. The memo is the only thing separating your deposit from someone else's. Without it, the receiving chain sees an incoming transfer with no owner. It cannot guess.

So what actually happens at the exchanger's end? Two possibilities exist, and the exchanger's own rules decide which one applies. Some exchangers will detect the missing memo at the moment of broadcast and simply cancel the swap before any funds move. Your SOL stays on the Solana side, and you get a refund minus any network fees already paid. Other exchangers will send the funds anyway, hoping you will notice and contact support. If that happens, your swapped tokens sit in a suspense account on the receiving chain. You must open a support ticket, prove you sent the original SOL, and provide the correct memo retroactively. Then the exchanger manually credits you. This process can take hours or days, and some exchangers charge a recovery fee for the manual work.

A critical detail: the memo is not a suggestion. It is part of the destination address, functionally speaking. On chains that require it, an address without a memo is incomplete. Treat it like a postal code on a letter - the street address might be right, but the letter will not arrive if the postal code is missing.

You can avoid this entirely by checking the receiving chain's requirements before you start the swap. The exchanger's order form usually shows a field for the memo when it is required. If you see that field, fill it with the exact value your receiving wallet or exchange gave you. Copy-paste it. Do not type it by hand. Memos are often case-sensitive, and a single wrong character produces the same failure as no memo at all.

One more edge case. Some receiving chains allow a memo but do not require it. In that scenario, the swap proceeds normally with no memo, and the funds arrive. The problem only exists where the memo is mandatory. Do not assume a chain is memo-required just because another chain with a similar name is. Check the specific asset and network in the exchanger's interface.

If the swap fails, do not resubmit the same order a second time without checking what went wrong. A failed swap might be refundable, but a duplicate order could double-spend your SOL balance or create two pending transactions. Contact the exchanger's support first, give them the transaction ID from the Solana side, and ask whether the memo was the issue.

The larger lesson here connects to the hub page, Swapping Solana tokens without a DEX: an exchanger is a middleman, and middlemen have bookkeeping rules that on-chain DEXs do not. A DEX simply moves tokens from wallet to wallet. An exchanger must reconcile deposits across many users, and the memo is its reconciliation tool. Understanding that one difference explains most exchanger failures you will ever encounter.
